Savannah, Georgia Transit Map Redesign Project

Project Type: Infographic Design

Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator

Year: Spring 2020

I created Savannah, Georgia Transit Map Redesign Project in my Digital Media Design I class. In this project, I explored redesigning, map design, icon design, color theory, and typography.

My assignment for this project was to redesign a transit map for a city of my choice. I chose to recreate a bus route map for Savannah, Georgia because of Savannah’s gridded street layout and its importance to me as a travel destination. To begin this project, I took note of what I liked and disliked about the original bus route map I was working from. The original bus route map used numbers to show where locations were and bright colors. For my map, I wanted to incorporate icons rather than numbers to denote important tourist locations. My map does not include every location that is on the original in the interest that my redesign is specifically meant for tourists traveling to the most popular spots. The icons I designed are squares with line illustrations inside of them that work cohesively with the rectangular and thin street lines on my map. I also wanted to use a muted color palette to highlight Savannah’s long history in Georgia and to provide more ease to viewers’ eyes. The brightest colors on the map show the bus routes and stops to help viewers see which bus line they should take and where bus stops are located across the city. I used a light and bold sans-serif typeface in order for my text to be legible at different sizes across my map and to show hierarchy of information.
