Interior Design and Mental Health Magazine

Project Type: Magazine Design

Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator + Adobe Photoshop + Adobe InDesign

Year: Spring 2021

I created Interior Design and Mental Health Magazine in my Typography class. In this project, I explored layout, typography, color theory, and illustration.

I was tasked with creating a magazine that connected a field of design with a topic of well-being and that consisted of three articles and two advertisements. For my magazine, I chose to focus on interior design and mental health and how these two topics are connected. I researched and found three articles that explored this connection. From there, I took the approach that each article needed to be uniquely stylized to incorporate variety across my magazine and be engaging.

The first article included in my magazine has the most text, so laying out the text in readable chucks was important so as to not overwhelm readers. I used stock-photos related to the text to help me achieve this. I used a serif typeface because of its sophistication and easy readability in long text passages. I chose to use a limited color palette consisting only of white and blue gray along with the black and white stock-photos to keep attention on the text.

The second article included in my magazine is shorter and divided into sections. I took advantage of those sections and kept my layout one section a page in order for simple article navigation. I pulled out helpful quotes to highlight important points. I chose an easy to read and charismatic sans-serif typeface for this article because of the space available on the page and the importance of bolded section headers in this article. Because I kept the layout of this article to one section a page, I had more room for color and illustration. Two topics discussed frequently in this article are light and pattern. From these topics, I was inspired to use a warm color palette and create a light ray pattern to become the background of the pages. Boxes of color behind the section headers and quotes was also another way to bring in more color and show hierarchy of information.

The final article included in my magazine has the least amount of text, but I still wanted to lay it out across multiple pages to have room for illustrative elements. I used a clean sans-serif typeface with legibility in mind as I designed the background of the pages to be reflective of blueprints with a dark blue background and a strong contrasting white for all of the text and illustrative elements. To fill in some of the awkward negative spaces the blueprint background created, I made line illustrations that worked well with the blueprint lines and that connected to the portions of the text they were included by.

The two advertisements I included in my magazine were for IKEA and Target because of these stores’ associations with interior design. Stock photos contributed to the composition of my advertisement designs.

  • Article credits are included in the magazine.

  • Article photos are stock photos.

  • All advertisements are recreations consisting of company logos and stock photos.
