Cross-Cultural Typography
Project Type: Typography + Poster Design
Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator + Adobe Photoshop + Adobe InDesign
Year: Fall 2021
I created Cross-Cultural Typography in my Topics in Graphic Design class. In this project, I explored creating my own typeface, illustration, and using a limited color palette.

For this project, I was tasked with creating a typeface that integrated three different cultures: Irish, Palestinian, and Indian. I was inspired by geometric sans-serif typefaces and established cultural designs when designing my typeface. I worked from a geometric sans-serif base typeface and illustrated different cultural elements over it to complete this project and create a new cross-cultural typeface. In my typeface, I included weaving curves to showcase Celtic design and represent Irish culture. The black lines of varying widths in my typeface represent Palestinian culture and were inspired by line patterns that are used on many headdresses, or keffiyehs. The gold triangle pattern in my typeface represents Indian culture and were inspired by a pattern I observed on a sari. I added color to my typeface to appropriately match the cultures each part of my letters represented. I chose green for Irish culture because of its established associations with the color, black for Palestinian culture based on its use on keffiyehs, and gold for Indian culture based on its use on saris.
